Why Every Pool Owner Should Have A Variable Speed Pool Pump Motor

Swimming Pool pump motors are second only to air conditioners as the largest guzzlers of household energy. Running both in the summer can get costly. Thankfully you can curb your ever mounting energy bills with a variable speed pool pump motor.

1) They are Energy Efficient

A variable speed motor can use anywhere from 50% to 75% less energy than a traditional single speed motor. Single speed motors only operate on maximum flow rates, while variable speed motors can slow water flow and maximize savings, while getting the same job done.

2) They Last a Long Time

Variable speed motors are enclosed and fan cooled. The enclosure protects the internal components of the motor from environmental factors, like snow and debris. The fact that they also run at lower speeds and are fan cooled means they also stay much cooler, which means replacing certain parts less often.

Single speed motors, on the other hand, are standard induction motors. They have vents, which can allow in water, debris and sometimes animals to cause damage.

3) They are Easy to Program

If you’ve decided to switch to a variable speed motor, installation is quite simple. The original single speed pump components can be transferred to the Variable Speed motor, including the wiring.

Once you’ve installed your variable speed motor, you need to program it. Unfortunately there isn’t a set standard for programming a variable speed motor. Your motors settings need to be set according to your pool equipment. Start by running the motor at different speeds until you find the minimum operating speeds. Once that’s determined, you can set your run times.

4) You Can Monitor Your Pool Remotely

Most everything can be run via an app on your smart phone these days, so why not your pool? Many variable pump motors can be controlled through an app, which allows pool owners to monitor and adjust setting at any time, from anywhere. Plus, many apps will give you up-to-date running costs so you know exactly what to expect on your next energy bill.

5) They’re Quiet

There’s nothing like enjoying a relaxing day in the pool, only to have it ruined by the loud pool motor working away. As mentioned before, variable speed pool motors are fully enclosed, this means most of the noise coming from the motor is muffled instead of coming through the vents of a single speed motor. Variable speed motors are also almost never operating at full speed, which further reduces potential noises.
